"Creating photomontages was a common practice among the women of the Victorian elite. Predominant in these collages are comments on the social rituals, fashion and everyday life, but also fantastic images inspired by fairy tales and comic cartoons. Among these images I found this collage from around 1870, where Jane Bouverie pasted photographs of different children occupying Alice’s places. This procedure would be reinvented by contemporary digital illustrators, highlighting the on going transformation of an Alice who in each figure was a different girl."
