ADRIANA PELIANO recebeu o terceiro prêmio na categoria “PROJETO GRÁFICO” no PREMIO JABUTI 2012. 

The 54th annual Jabuti ("Tortoise") awards from the Câmara Brasileira do Livro (Brazilian Book Guild), honoring excellence in Brazilian literature and publishing, announced their 2012 awards yesterday. I am very pleased to say that my book Aventuras de Alice no Subterrâneo (Alice's Adventures under Ground) by Editora Scipione took third place in the Projeto Gráfico (Graphic Design, 28) category.

O manuscrito original de “Alice’s adventures under Ground” (Aventuras de Alice no Subterrâneo, 1862-1864) foi criado como um presente de amor de Lewis Carroll para sua musa e companheira de viagens Alice Liddell. Ele foi dedicado a ela como “Um presente de Natal para uma Criança Querida em Memória de um Dia de Verão”. A estória surgiu de outra estória (passeio de barco, 1862), deu origem a uma outra estória (Alice no País das Maravilhas, 1865), que deu origem a uma outra estória (Nursery Alice, 1890), num excêntrico e "interminável conto de fadas".  

Ao recriar o manuscrito em português minha idéia era aproximar o resultado o máximo possível do objeto original. Para isso o design deveria parecer quase imperceptível. Desafios, incertezas, descobertas, riscos e surpresas, o estranho e a delicadeza viajam entre os silêncios desenhados no olhar de uma menina. A letra de mão do autor foi recriada como se Lewis Carroll tivesse escrito o manuscrito em português para cada um de nós. Na tradução do texto busquei alimentar as palavras com a alegria e a curiosidade de ler uma estória sempre pela primeira vez. 

Posso até dizer que devo compartilhar esse prêmio com Lewis Carroll. Dedico esse livro a ele, à Alice Liddell, a um passeio de barco, a todas as Alices e coelhos do mundo, mas acima de tudo a força e a magia de um encontro. 

A beleza desse pequeno livro é visível mas também invisível. Ela sopra no limiar de um sonho dentro de um sonho, suspira segredos para o coração e à noite convida as figuras do livro para brincar de lógica, faz de conta e de nonsense.

 O manuscrito original de Alice traz o chamado para o desconhecido e a descoberta da transformação. Com um livro em suas mãos cada um se torna também uma Alice, ao mesmo tempo única e múltipla. Nessa viagem o livro nos oferece a possibilidade de dar presentes para dentro de nós mesmos e também nos convidar para a grande aventura de viver.

discovered that beneath the photograph lay a drawing of Alice from Carroll.

The original manuscript of Alice’s Adventures under Ground (1862-1864) was created as a present from Lewis Carroll to his muse and “travel companion,” Alice Liddell. This love- offering was dedicated to her as “a Christmas gift to a dear child in memory of a summer day.” That story (Under Ground) came from another story (the boat trip) and would be the origin of another story (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) that would be the origin of yet another story (The Nursery Alice), in one eccentric and “interminable fairy tale.” 

When I decided to recreate the manuscript in Portuguese, I intended to have it be as close as possible to the original object. In doing that I looked for a design that would seem almost imperceptibly different. The pictures, conversations, discoveries, doubts, surprises, obstacles, the strangeness and the delicacy, all came from Lewis Carroll’s original. His handwriting was recreated as if he had written the book in Portuguese for each one of us. In the translation I intended to imbue the words with happiness and invoke curiosity, to read the book as if for the first time. 

I can even say that I share this prize with Lewis Carroll. This graceful book is a gift dedicated to him, to Alice Liddell, to a boat trip, to all Alices and rabbits in the world, but mainly, to the strength and magic from an encounter. 

The beauty of this book is both visible and invisible. It breathes in the realm of a dream inside a dream, whispering secrets to our hearts, and during the night inviting the pictures to come out of the book to play with logic, nonsense and make-believe. 

It brings a call to the unknown and the recognition of the nature of transformation. With the book in our hands each of us becomes an Alice, at the same time unique and plural. In this homage we call forth from the original the possibility of giving a gift from our inner lands that is also an invitation for the great adventure that is to live.
