I am still pursuing my research on Alice collectors who share their treasures online, and each encounter may open a new doors to the unimpossible. Among them is the fascinating entity Semper Lux, who describes herself as collecting for fun, yet her “fun” lights up entire constellations. Sometimes she appears as a Duchess with a dog, an exquisite cook tending her garden, other times as a bearded noble of the sixteenth century as in an El Greco painting, three of her many heteronyms in open admiration of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa.
Semper Lux investigates nexialist connections in the editions of Alice she discovers, rare and finely chosen, weaving links with other jewels of literature, opera, cinema, philosophy, arts, and beyond. I will never forget when she revealed that Alice trapped in the Rabbit’s house reflected Madame Bovary trapped within the social conventions of her time. Such insights echo Alberto Manguel’s words: Alice is an infinite book. Her connections are so sharp and surprising that those who think it is invention begin to doubt whether it might be true, while those who believe it is true begin to wonder if it is invention, a living exercise in creative writing embodied through collecting.
And among so many journeys, her canine devotion shines through in her favorite character in Wonderland: the Puppy: "He is the only one not rude." In his honor, I bring here her beloved Puppy from Gavin L. O'Keefe's illustration, the amazing Carrollian artist who illustrate Alice three times. There will be two of Gavin's puppies in this post, the first inspired by Misia, the second by Toby, with photos of both puppies also included. As an extra whimsy, I also created an animation of Whimsy Mimsy, the mascote of this quest, playing with Toto from The Wizard of Oz, another book we both love and collect. According to Semprer Lux, this generative Toto is a "dog that behaves like a cat". All is possible in the unimpossible realm!
