These Alices by Katarzyna Widmanska are intense and recreate the story in a contemporary perspective keeping a dialogue between our well known references and the singular universe of the artist. It plays with identity and performance, with the possibilities of stage and fashion photography to capture imagination with its subleties. The light creates a marvellous atmosphere, and we are invited to a world of dreams, being, at the same time, strange and familiar. References to art history instigate us, opening paths for different readings.
Alice herself is not the domesticated and naif Alice of Tenniel. Instead, she dares into eroticism, metamorphosis, gender identities and a plethora of affections and passions of a girl becoming a woman and learning and winning her own power. Alice's gaze dares the camera and ourselves, that are invited to see a well known "fairy tale" in an adult, less passive and stereotypical way. I loved!
"Katarzyna Widmańska’s exhibition draws us into a mysterious world, sometimes dark, but uninterruptedly stunning. The artist herself emphasises that there is no hidden message in her photographs waiting to be discovered. Their aim is to hypnotize, involve the observer into an alternate reality, to affect his senses and emotions, with no unnecessary detour into the sphere of rationality."
