A boat Beneath a Sunny Sky by Lewis Carroll

(from Through the Looking Glass, 1872)

A boat beneath a sunny sky,
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July —
Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear —
Long had paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memories die.
Autumn frosts have slain July.
Still she haunts me, phantomwise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes.
Children yet, the tale to hear,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Lovingly shall nestle near.
In a Wonderland they lie,
Dreaming as the days go by,
Dreaming as the summers die:
Ever drifting down the stream —
Lingering in the golden gleam —
Life, what is it but a dream?

Ao sol segue o barco em frente.
Lento desliza, sonhadoramente,
Inclinando-se à voga na corrente.

Caras ciranças, um trio a escutar,
Excitamento e brilho em seu olhar
Por tão singelo conto a palpitar.

Longe se vai aquele céu dourado,
Eco que esmorece, do passado:
Ao sol de estio, sucede outono e enfado.

Sempre me perseguindo essa lembança.
Alice, sombra no céu que não se alcança,
Nunca visya por olhos sem esperança.

Contudo, vejo-as ainda a palpitar,
Em seus rostos acesos este olhar
Luzindo de avidez ao escutar.

Imagens de um país das maravilhas,
Distantes neste sonho onde o sol brilha,
Distante sonho onde o verão se estilha.

Elas deslizam ao longe, no entressonho,
Lentamente sobre um céu risonho...
Longe. A vida o que é, senão um sonho?
