Fit 4: Great Puzzle

Kenneth Rougeau
(EUA, 2009)
Digital collages

Kenneth Rougeau / Quentin Massys / William Adolphe Bougerau

"Tenniel’s illustrations were revealed by Martin Gardner as intertextual networks with art history, political cartoons, cultural habits, biographical connections, historical landscapes, and a plethora of references to literature, history and science. Rougeau absorbed some of these in figurative scenes, creating fragmented and nonlinear narratives.

Rougeau’s Alices are also a new girl in each picture, creating a character with a multiple and ever-changing identity. The American digital artist mixed photographs by Lewis Carroll of little girls with females depicted by other artists, such as the photographer Julia Margaret Cameron and paintings by Bouguereau. These references articulate transformations in the representation of the female body in art history. Cross-stories reveal that reading is always a retelling, more a corkscrew than a path."
