Curiouser and curiouser

 

 

A new ballet based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass will premiere at the Hamburg State Opera on June 20, 2026.

The production, titled Wonderland, is choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky and created for the Hamburg Ballet, with music performed by the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg. The stage design is by Sebastian Hannak, costumes by David Szauder, and dramaturgy by Vivien Arnold.

Carroll’s two books, published in the 19th century, remain a recurring source for reinterpretations across different artistic forms. The characters of Wonderland, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the March Hare, the Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts, continue to circulate as cultural figures far beyond the original texts.

This new ballet revisits Alice’s journey through a world governed by its own logic, a place that has often been read as dream, parallel reality, or exploration of the unconscious.

"'ALiCE' tells the story of a woman, or perhaps a child, unsure of her identity and where she is going. Escaping or exploring, discovering the powers within her changing body. The world around her is different, curious, and compelling – at times absolutely bonkers. 

 Following the internationally acclaimed success of her adaptation of 'Pinocchio', award-winning choreographer Jasmin Vardimon’s newest creation is a re-imagining of the groundbreaking classic, 'Alice in Wonderland'. A sensory feast of arresting images, powerful performers and striking kinetic scenery. 

First coming to life through a VR experience touring the UK early in 2022, Jasmin Vardimon Company brings 'ALiCE' to the stage this autumn. Co-commissioned by Sadler’s Wells and Dance East, ICCI and Kent County Council." 

 

Amazing Alice's adventures with Lindsay Kemp

A mentor to the late David Bowie has died. The British choreographer, dancer and mime Lindsay Kemp — who helped shape the Ziggy Stardust persona — died this morning. He was 80. Lindsay Keith Kemp was a dancer, actor, teacher, mime artist and choreographer. Watch a bit of Kemp's Alice production.

"ALICE’S ADVENTURES UNDER GROUND Naupaca Dance Factory’s contemporary dance interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland will attempt to translate the story’s Victorian quest for the origins of selfhood into an exploration of the materiality of the body. The project will attempt to bring to bear upon the story of Alice, the wandering female figure, postmodern theoretical accounts of identity and subversion. Adopting a postfeminist stance, referring mainly to Judith Butler’s notions of performativity and gender, Alice’s Adventures Under Ground proposes to explore the sense of the abnormal and the unintelligible which resides within wonderland, within the spaces that exist outside of the boundaries of normativity. In Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, bodily movement – choreography – will strive to articulate unspeakable desires as nonhuman, ahuman and posthuman bodies are unveiled and enlivened."


 “ I believe that the story’s theme of the search of identity is, after all, familiar, not only to each and every ten-year-old, but to all of us. I believe that the search of one’s own identity is in the preoccupation of every human being. There’s just no time to stop and think thoroughly about it, in contemporary society. I hope that at the end of the production people will leave the theatre thinking about and reflecting upon the more important things in life.”
